Guo Juan 5P describes the background for this recent game between strong amateurs:

“This month I will write a little about the Israel Go Society and review one of their games.

“Many years ago at the World youth championship I met a group of enthusiastic young players from Israel, including Ali Jabarin and Amir Fragman. Ali is the first European pro. Today Ali has reached the 2p level and is becoming a very strong player, also making great results in Asia pro competitions. Although Amir changed his life direction, he stays active and has become a high level player. Ofer Zivony is one of the strongest players in Israel and a very talented player.

“Last year at the Pisa European congress I met them again. They have grown up and I was so happy to see these wonderful young guys! So here I was, visiting the Jerusalem tournament and seeing my little friends.

“The Israel Go society is not big by size, and many players learned go after watching Hikaru no Go. There is no go school, and except for Ali, there are no other pro teachers. But they have very strong players – I admire them.”
